Top 5 Tech Tips for an Environmentally Friendly Business

Earth Day 2019 takes place on 22nd April 2019, and with the dangers of climate change greater than ever, small businesses can make key changes to be more environmentally responsible.

So to celebrate Earth Day, we share the top 5 ways small businesses can embrace tech and make small changes to collectively make a big difference and how Six Ticks’ team of website and CRM developers are playing our part.

1. Say So Long to Paper

Six Ticks is a completely paperless office (in fact, we don’t even own a printer) and we are encouraging and helping  our clients to do the same.

Every day we speak to businesses who are still printing everything, passing bits of paper with various scribbles on them around the office. But there are better ways for SME’s.

Small businesses can go paper free by tapping into paperless technologies such as CRM systems for sales, admin, orders, and data storage. This will not only improve efficiency, but – importantly – it helps businesses to stop being wasteful with their printing and paper habits.

2. Meet Online

The carbon dioxide produced from petrol and diesel vehicles is one of the biggest contributors to global warming. But in the internet age we live in, tech has made it easy for businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and significantly reduce day-to-day commuting or travelling to meetings.

At Six Ticks, many of our team work from home, and almost all team meetings are done via video calls rather than in person. We also deliver client calls and training via Skype or online wherever possible.

Not only does this help us to play our part towards reducing carbon emissions, but it saves the business money in fuel, vehicle expenses, and commuting costs. It also means our customers aren’t paying extra so we can have big, plush offices! It’s win-win!

3. Introduce Digital Systems

Too often we see clients muddling along using old fashioned systems that simply slow their businesses down. A small initial investment in a new bespoke CRM system or digital system can bring your business together and save you time and money in the long run, not to mention the positive impact this can have on the environment.

For example, we have developed a travelling salesman CRM add-on to our system that maps the most effective routes for field teams so they use the least amount of fuel (it can process up to 500 locations in just a few seconds).

4. Switch Off

Even the tiniest actions can help to reduce your business’s carbon footprint and improve its efficiency.

So turning off the heating, lights, and computers when you leave the office, even for short periods, is something that everyone can do, and can ultimately help to reduce power plant emissions.

Other small actions include only boiling the water you need when making a cup of tea for the office, rather than filling up the whole kettle for two cups of tea and using unnecessary energy. And don’t forget to take a reusable cup to the coffee shop when you’re on the move to reduce the use of one-use cups!

At Six Ticks we remind staff of these little things at our team meetings – then everyone knows the office policy and we are therefore all responsible for working together to play our part.

5.       Think Differently

Our philosophy and approach to all of our projects give Six Ticks a competitive edge, we understand the issues, we map out the ideal solutions, we have the know-how, and we deliver it in a way that is going to be not only best for the client, but best for the environment too!

Some of our projects (completed and currently in progress) that will have positive environmental impacts are:

  • Manufacturing CRM – Removal of 75% of paper printed, with aims to remove all printing in the next few years.

  • Shropshire Partners in Care – Scoping of system that will remove the need for printing (60+ pages per event they host will all be digitalised).

  • Award winning law firm FBC – All reporting digitalised and accessible via a web-portal.

  • Local recruitment company– Reporting digitalised, and all 20+ forms per candidate are being digitalised to remove any requirement of paper forms.
Earth Day 2019 takes place on 22nd April 2019, and with the dangers of climate change greater than ever, small businesses can make key changes to be more environmentally responsible.
